The IUGG Tsunami Commission

Scope
The IUGG Tsunami Commission covers various aspects of tsunamis from their generation, propagation and coastal run-up. The tsunamis are generated by various submarine processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and submarine landslides, hence studied in seismology, volcanology, and marine geology and geophysics. The tsunami propagation is theoretically studied, numerically modeled and observed by various instruments set in deep ocean, coastal water and on coasts. Coastal studies include trace of tsunamis in geological records or historical documents, and tsunami risk calculation, mitigation and countermeasures.
The Tsunami Commission is a joint commission sponsored by IASPEI, IAPSO and IAVCEI. It was established at the 12th General Assembly of IUGG in Helsinki, Finland in 1960 to promote the exchange of scientific and technical information about tsunamis among nations concerned with the tsunami hazard. Since then, the Commission held 21 Tsunami Symposia as a part of the IUGG General Assemblies and independently in an alternate order.
